Charitable Gift Tally |
||
Many of you chose to make donations to organizations that we
support, and we would like to send an extra special thank you to those of
you who did. As promised, here is a tally of the donations made.
We do not have dollar amounts to share because we asked the organizations
not to tell us who gave how much money. But we are thrilled at the
impact our friends and family have made on organizations that are
important to us and to them.
As of July 29, 2005, there have been:
Notices about donations are still coming in from organizations and from friends and family members, so we believe that this list will continue to grow. It is already very impressive! Thank you all for supporting organizations that are desperately in need of additional funds. PreventionWorks! - Kristen was an intern at PreventionWorks last summer. PreventionWorks is the only needle exchange organization in Washington, DC and it does a great job providing harm reduction services to injection drug users and others in DC to prevent the spread of HIV, Hepatitis, and other blood-borne infections. It is important to support PreventionWorks because the District of Columbia is the only city in the nation barred by Federal law from investing its own local tax dollars to support needle exchange programs. Despite the fact that the DC government has expressed its support for harm reduction and its desire to fund PreventionWorks, it is prevented from doing so and therefore all funding for this program comes from private donations. Food and Friends - Food and Friends provides nutritious meals to people living with HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses in DC, Maryland and Virginia. Every Thanksgiving Frank prepares more than 20 pumpkin pies and brings them to Food and Friends to be delivered along with Thanksgiving meals. He has been doing this since 1999 and strongly supports Food and Friends' mission. Kristen has also been involved with Food and Friends. She coordinated weekly deliveries of meals with her co-workers at DAI when she was working in DC several years ago. The company continues to deliver meals every week. This is a great organization that has several nutritionists on staff and prepares around 20 different types of meals each day in order to meet people's varied nutritional needs at different stages of their illnesses. Planned Parenthood NYC (or your local Planned Parenthood chapter) - Kristen has been studying reproductive health in NY for the past three years and is a firm believer that all women should have access to accurate and confidential family planning information and services. Planned Parenthood does great work all over the country and around the world, and your donation will help to prevent unplanned pregnancies and guarantee women's access to reproductive health services for all women, regardless of their socioeconomic status. The Smile Train - The Smile Train is dedicated to helping the millions of children in the world who suffer from cleft lip and palate through free surgery for children, free training for doctors, and research to find a cure. Nearly 100% of your donation will go directly to providing these services because the doctors volunteer their time and bring their own equipment with them. Kristen first heard about this organization in college and witnessed the life-changing effect of this surgery on some of her students in Uzbekistan. |
